GAZE

Beneath my window
I watch you play,
Footballs, cricket and mighty kites.

Above my roof
I watch you stay
Close to the stars and clouds.

The colours are burnt
Of your shirt,
In the bright midday sun.

The wall seems to be pale
Of your room,
In the afternoon’s glaze.

I see you closer
To the sand
And envy the mud across the bay.

I see you closer
To the stars
And envy the sparkle you see that way.

I see you jump, shout and fight
With your friends of the alley.
For tiny toffees and pebbles,
As you rejoice and be jolly again.

I see your window
From my camp bed
And wander in the Dawn,
Do you see the sun rise,
Even before it’s Dawn?
